Rip currents near coastal structures commonly occur in Lake Michigan in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Lack of timely warning due to undocumented characteristics of rip currents and no assessment tool can contribute to tragic drownings incidents. In this paper, we characterized rip current occurrences near breakwater structures and developed an assessment tool for providing timely rip current warnings to beachgoers at the study site, City of Port Washington, WI. Characteristics of rip currents near the structure were observed from field measurements or visual images. Deflection rip currents had speeds of ~ 0.2 m/s and lasted for several hours. The rip current occurrences were associated with environmental proxies. It was found that rip currents can occur even when the water appears calm near the structure. A Structure Rip Checklist and Assessment Matrix (SRiCAM) with a four-tiered risk was developed and validated using observations. Furthermore, the SRiCAM was integrated into cyberinfrastructure with a data contingency plan to provide real-time warnings to the public. The applicability of the SRiCAM to other locations across Lake Michigan was further tested and results are promising. Overall, the SRiCAM has the potential to be widely extended to foster recreational water safety and resilience to rip current hazards in the Great Lakes.  相似文献

X-type samarium-cadmium co-substituted hexaferrite with compositions Ba2-xSmxCo2CdyFe28-yO46 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.08, and 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.4) were prepared at 1340 °C using a simple heat treatment technique. All heated samples were characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, VSM, M?ssbauer, and low-frequency dielectric measurements. XRD analysis of prepared samples shows the formation of X as a major phase along with hematite. The MS value varied from 67.01 Am2/kg to 50.43 Am2/kg; whereas the Hc value changed from 2.95 kA/m to 6.17 kA/m, A high value of MS (67.01 Am2/kg) is observed in the pure sample, and a very low value of Hc (2.95 kA/m) is observed for x = 0.06, y = 0.3 compositions, but Mr/Ms < 0.5 confirm the multi-domain nature of prepared hexaferrites. Hysteresis loops of all samples are narrow, and confirmed that formed samples belong to magnetically soft. Mössbauer spectra of the three samples (S1, S3, and S5) show the existence of doublets. Significantly low values of coercivity, retentivity, and loss tangent in Sm–Cd substituted samples signified those prepared materials can be used to design electromagnets, transformer cores, electric motors, and maybe a potential candidate for lossless low-frequency applications.  相似文献

To reduce the energy consumption of the shrimp blanching process and improve the economic value of the blanched product, a transcritical CO2 heat pump blanching system (THPB system) was designed in this paper. The trends of astaxanthin were investigated at atmospheric pressure near boiling temperature, combined with the color and structural properties of shrimp samples, and the optimal blanching times of 270 s and 240 s were obtained at 90°C and 95°C, respectively. In contrast to the fuel blanching system (FB system) at 100°C, the annual standard coal consumption of the THPB system with 90°C blanching is decreased by 79%, and the annual operating cost can be saved by CNY 63,800, with a payback period of about 3.13 years.Industrial relevanceBlanching is one of the effective ways to prolong the shelf life of shrimp. However, the research on the blanching time and temperature of shrimp is not comprehensive. In addition, the traditional fuel blanching process has high energy consumption and pollution, and can no longer meet the quality requirements of the modern food processing industry. Heat pump has been shown to have better performance in food drying, but it is less used in blanching. The information presented in this study may provide other insights into food processing.  相似文献

This study assessed a continuous in-line decontamination system for food contact surfaces and processing equipment that utilized cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) generated from ambient air. The plasma system was evaluated against two common foodborne pathogens (Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes) on stainless steel surfaces and against S Typhimurium on commercial poly[ether]-thermoplastic poly[urethane] (PE-TPU) conveyor belts, under simulated conditions of a food-processing facility. A significant level of microbial inactivation was achieved, up to 3.03 ± 0.18 and 2.77 ± 0.71 logCFU/mL reductions of L. monocytogenes and S. Typhimurium respectively within 10 s total treatment on stainless steel surfaces, and a 2.56 ± 0.37 logCFU/mL reduction of S. Typhimurium within 4 s total treatment on the PE-TPU material, according to a procedure based on the well-established EN 13697:2015 industrial protocol. CAP exposure was shown to have a minor impact on the morphology and composition of the treated surfaces. The results indicated that CAP can be applied for effective and continuous disinfection against common foodborne pathogens in food-processing facilities.Industrial relevanceLow temperature plasmas have shown great promise for microbial decontamination, yet industrial uptake of the technology has been limited due to scaling limitations. In this study, a prototype conveyor-based CAP decontamination system was developed and tested under realistic conditions expected within a food-processing facility. The results showed a high level of antimicrobial action against two common foodborne pathogens within a few seconds of CAP exposure, a timescale in line with industrial line processing speeds. Our findings demonstrated that CAP shows great promise for the continuous in-situ decontamination of food contact surfaces, with the potential to mitigate against the costly downtimes incurred in current production line practices implementing chemical disinfectants.  相似文献

Corrosion and wear failures are bottlenecks for restricting applications and developments of Al-based functional materials. As a new lubrication technology, superhydrophobic preparation provides an effective way to settle Al alloy corrosion. The preparation methods of superhydrophobic Al alloys are mainly multistep strategies. In this study, superhydrophobic Al alloy, has been prepared by an efficient one-step electrochemical etching process. Meanwhile, its micromorphology has been observed by a scanning electron microscope. The wettability has been measured by video optical contact angle meter. The corrosion behavior has been tested by electrochemical workstation, and wear performance has been characterized by friction tester. The results show that the micro-nanoterraced concave–convex structure has been fabricated and an as-prepared surface exhibits excellent superhydrophobic behavior. Further electrochemical and tribological tests show that corrosion resistance and wear resistance have also been significantly improved. This study provides a new method to prepare wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant Al alloy for widening applications of multifunctional Al-based engineering materials.  相似文献

Mixed phase materials in the quasi binary diopside (CaMgSi2O6) – molybdite (MoO3) system were synthesized by a precipitation method. Materials were fabricated with diopside to molybdite ratios of 1:0, 10:1, 5:1, 2:1 and 1:1. XRD, SEM and EDS results show that alongside the initial diopside phase, phases such as calcium molybdate CaMoO4, rod-like enstatite MgSiO3 and cristobalite SiO2 formed as the molybdite content increased, and diopside was entirely absent at the highest molybdite content. At lower Mo content, mixed phase materials showed higher hardness and slower biodegradation in SBF relative to pristine diopside, while maintaining reasonable hydroxyapatite (HAp) formation capability. In contrast, materials with higher molybdite content exhibited lower hardness and bioactivity. The variation in the mechanical and bioactive performance could be attributed to the presence of bulk CaMoO4, acting as a reinforcement, and rod-like MgSiO3 with a highly porous and fragile structure. The trend of hardness is not consistent to the proportion of the component phases could be attributed to morphologies, interfaces, and densities of the samples. Both of secondary phases had poorer HAp deposition compared to pure diopside, indicating the MoO3 addition lowered mixed phase CaMgSi2O6 – MoO3 bioceramics’ ability to form Hap. The results suggest that moderate addition of molybdite to diopside would be an effective pathway towards crystalline bioceramics with enhanced performance.  相似文献

Technology standards facilitate the transparency in market and the supplies of products with good quality. For manufacturers, standards make it possible to reduce the costs by mass production, and enhance system adaptabilities through integrating system modules with the standardized interfaces. However, International standards on industrial robots such as ISO-9283 were developed in 1998, and they have not updated since then. Due to every-increasing applications of robots in complex systems, there is an emerging need to advance existing standards on robots for a broader scope of system components and system integration. This paper gives an introduction of the endeavors by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST); especially, it overviews the recent progresses on the standardized tests of robotic systems and components. The presented work aims to identify the limitations of existing industrial standards and clarify the trend of technology standardizations for industrial robotic systems.  相似文献
